It’s hard to imagine how much we’ve learned about the world around us is just the last century or so, but it’s safe to say that we know quite a bit about pretty much everything there is to know. In some areas, though, scientists still have no idea what they’re dealing with and are reduced to guessing based on the limited evidence they have to work with. Here are eight mysteries that still baffle scientists today.
1) Nazca Lines, Peru
The mysterious geoglyphs known as Nazca Lines have been a source of great debate since their discovery in the early 1900s. The almost 500 lines, which vary in length from several meters to hundreds of meters, were found etched into a desert plateau in Peru, and some theories about how they were created range from alien visitors to prehistoric astronauts.
2) Moai on Easter Island
Easter Island is well-known for its enormous statues, called moai. These monolithic structures were carved by natives of Easter Island sometime between 1250 and 1500 A.D., and some of them are still unfinished. The purpose of these 887 structures has baffled archaeologists for decades. Some have speculated that they served as altars or memorials, while others have proposed that they represented deified ancestors or clan leaders—or even that they had a role in religious ceremonies.
3) Palace of Knossos, Crete
Dating back to 2600 BC, it’s believed that Knossos was once home to a powerful Minoan civilization and maybe have been where Linear A, an ancient language that has yet to be deciphered, was developed. But what purpose did Knossos serve? And why did it go out of use so suddenly? We may never know.
4) Iron Pillar of Delhi
The Iron Pillar is a structural marvel, standing at 5.6 meters tall and weighing over 6 tonnes, with no visible means of support. The pillar is estimated to be nearly 1,600 years old, dating back to about 400 CE. It continues to baffle metallurgists and archaeologists as it does not display any signs of rust or corrosion even after centuries of exposure to Delhi’s harsh weather conditions.
5) Voynich Manuscript
Many believe that a man named Wilfrid Voynich discovered and purchased an ancient manuscript in Italy, which he later sold to rare book dealer H.P. Kraus for $24,500. What makes these documents so unique is that they are written entirely in an unknown alphabet and, of course, no one has been able to decipher their meaning. The only text contained in them pertains to medicinal plants.
6) Stonehenge
Although we can only speculate as to its purpose, historians believe Stonehenge was erected between 3000 BC and 2000 BC. While it’s true that some of its original stones have been taken away by locals for personal use, many still remain.
7) Antikythera Mechanism
In 1900, a Greek sponge diver found an ancient shipwreck off a tiny island in Greece. The Antikythera Mechanism is what we now call a mysterious clockwork-like device he pulled out of it. No one knows exactly how old it is—some say 2000 years old, some 3000—but no one denies that it was made with sophisticated technology. To make things even more mysterious, historians still can’t agree on what purpose it served or who might have built it.
8) Bermuda Triangle
One of history’s most famous unsolved mysteries. The Bermuda Triangle is an area located in the western part of a section of ocean that is defined by three points: Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, where dozens of planes and ships have disappeared without a trace for decades. No one knows what causes these disappearances—and plenty of theories exist—but there’s no doubt that something strange is happening in that part of the sea.
